Make a space for my body
“Americans are so prude,” she said. “I think it’s great that people don’t get it. I don’t care. The funniest comments were the ones like ‘This can’t be serious.’ ” - Robyn
Dear Ponies,
What’s going on? I hope you can find some staring-at-nature-time today! I’ve been noticing all the grasshoppers (huge) and incognito crickets (small) in my backyard, so many tones of brown!
Did you see the Jia Tolentino article about Robyn in the New Yorker this week!? I had to tell my family that I would be unavailable for the next 30 mins while I read the article with my coffee. What a delight, I highly recommend it! Jia Tolentino is one of my favorite culture writers. She is so smart and hilarious and I always learns so much from her writing. Here book of essays, Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion, is totally brilliant and made me LOL and think deeply about things like “The I in the Internet” and “The Cult of the Difficult Woman.”
I learned so many cool tidbits like, Aaliyah and Robyn hung out a few times! That she is a mama! This article is so good at articulating why we love Robyn so much and deftly draws how she energetically fills the space between sorrow and clubbing.
There are many societal messages that tell femmes, as we age, we must become invisible. And my personal response is, I ain’t going out like that. So whenever I see a 40+ femme in the spotlight doing her acts of resistance through art, that may or maybe not be understood, regardless of what the faceless hordes says on the internet, I have to say brava! It makes me feel hopeful that we can continue to swim through the deluge of shit that is raining down on our communities everyday and make it out one day. Thank you Robyn and Jia! And thank you Ponies!
Sending love!
Michella
P.S. We are going to have a special all Robyn songs event later this year! More details to come!
